About the Deep History Atlas
The Deep History Atlas is an interactive "river" of human history. Each colored band is a polity — an empire, kingdom, dynasty, or state — and the width of its band at any moment is the physical territory it controlled at that time. Read top to bottom and you are scrolling backward through time, from the present day down through the states era and into deep time, where our hominin ancestors and the first Neolithic settlements appear. Tap or hover any band for a name, a short description, and a link to its Wikipedia article. On a phone, pinch to scale the river between an overview and a close read, and pan sideways across the continents.
A Rebuild of the 1931 Histomap
This project is a deliberate homage to — and an upgrade of — John B. Sparks' famous Histomap of World History, a five-foot-long chart published by Rand McNally in 1931 that streamed the "relative power" of civilizations down a single scroll. The Histomap was gorgeous and wildly influential, but its band widths were Sparks' own subjective judgment of "power" — undocumented, Western-weighted, and impossible to check. The Deep History Atlas keeps the river metaphor and replaces the guesswork with data.
How It Works — Data
- Territorial footprint from Seshat / Cliopatria. Band widths come from the Seshat Global History Databank's geospatial release (Cliopatria), which reconstructs the land area controlled by roughly 1,400 historical polities across time — 13,765 area records in all. Instead of a 1931 art director's sense of "power," each band's thickness is grounded in reconstructed square kilometers of controlled territory. (Cliopatria is released CC-BY 4.0.)
- Descriptions from Wikipedia & Wikidata. The short blurb and link that appear when you open a band were harvested for every resolvable polity from the Wikipedia and Wikidata APIs — 1,416 of 1,418 polities matched.
- The deep-time layer. Below the states era, a separate log-scaled zone carries our hominin relatives (from Australopithecus afarensis through Neanderthals, Denisovans, and Homo sapiens) and the earliest Neolithic settlements (Jericho, Çatalhöyük, Mehrgarh, Norte Chico). These are species and cultures, not territorial states, so they are drawn as dated spans rather than area-share bands — a visual reminder that the rules change when you cross out of recorded history.
How It Works — Craft
The river is a custom SVG streamgraph. Each polity is drawn as a single continuous band that is born from a point, swells with its territory, necks down through periods of collapse, and tapers back to a point when it ends — so an empire's rise and fall reads as an organic shape rather than a stack of hard rectangles. Time is a piecewise scale: linear across the ~5,000-year states era, then logarithmic through the millions of years of deep time, so both a single reign and the span of human evolution can share one continuous canvas. Regions are color-coded; the newest nation-states are separated into their own visual register.
Why We Built This
Most history is taught as a sequence of separate stories — Rome, then the Middle Ages, then the modern world; China over here, Mesoamerica over there. A single scaled canvas lets you see the thing those stories leave out: simultaneity. You can watch the Han and the Roman Empire share a moment at opposite ends of Eurasia, see how much older Egypt is than your intuition insists, and feel how thin the entire recorded states era is against the deep time beneath it. It is a map for wrapping your head around the whole shape of the human story at once.
Limitations
Reconstructed historical territory is an estimate, not a measurement — Cliopatria's areas carry real uncertainty, coverage is uneven across regions and eras, and "controlled land area" is only one proxy for a civilization's significance (it says nothing about population, wealth, or influence). Deep-time dates are conventional academic ranges and will shift as the fossil and genetic record grows. Treat the atlas as a way to see scale and simultaneity, not as a precise ledger.
